Berein was the eldest son of a powerful and wealthy noble house. Lareena was the daughter of another: less powerful, but even more wealthy, and its only child. With such close ages, and with their families both frequent visitors to the capital, the two were engaged at no older than five, and married at seventeen. The two, despite their long engagement, had spent little time alone together before the marriage, and in spite of their clashing personalities -- Lareena was cold, Berein filled with fire --, they managed to get along the first few months. Berein was often away on business, and even while home, he spent his days working away from the couple's large house.

It was four months after the wedding that Lareena found herself pregnant. The first three months were easy, the next less so, and the final three almost unbearable. But it was during this time that Lareena learned why her husband was away, and where he was going.

And, more importantly, what he was doing there.

Some wondered about House Seadre's rapid rise to power. They were old, true, and respected, and members of the household had done great things, but its founder was nothing special: the King's bodyguard who, after a lifetime of service, had been given a title.

Few people knew the truth.

After retirement, the bodyguard had become the country's first torturer. Under the King's direct command, he gathered information -- somewhat less effectively than the spymaster, of course, but his secrets were guaranteed to be true. The position was passed down from generation to generation, son to son, lord of the house to its firstborn heir.

On __ _, the first twins in 289 years were born to House Seadre, both female.

The oldest was Ariadne.

At age six, her training began when her father ordered her to kill her pet rabbit. Despite hysterical protests and pleas for help to her mother (their mother, who cared little for both her husband and her children, and who turned back to her book), she eventually complied. It was sporadic from then on: weeks would go by while her father busied himself at the capital, but a new lesson always accompanied his return.

She grew to both love and hate Berein. He was the only one who understood her, yet he was the one who was cruelest to her; he tried to improve her, and under his teachings she was broken and remade. Now, at twenty-one, these feelings conflict more than ever.

Lady Ariadne of House Seadre is a cheerful, charming young woman, talkative and obliging. The perfect lady, perfect hostess, and perfect woman, while what she says and where her tastes lie seem to be a bit ... off at times, she and Medea are both well-liked among the upper-class.

While on the job, she's much the same, but with a few key differences. This Ariadne is cruel and spiteful, bordering on sadistic, and has learned to love the sound of screaming. She manipulates those around her, both obviously and subtlely, and loves to play mind-games.

For all she does, though, Ariadne loves her siblings, and her sister, especially: loves her deeply, completely, with all her heart and soul. She is fiercely protective of Medea, of her sister's innocence and her naivete, and an insult to her is one of the few things that can anger her. And that's why she tells her lies of butchers and injuries. All she does, she does for love.

With long golden hair, almost flawless cream skin, and large brown eyes, Ariadne looks more like a porcelain doll than human, a resemblance all the more plain with her petite height. While less frail than her sister, she's still delicate, with small hands and thin wrists.

Medea wears light colors, but Ariadne dresses in vibrant greens and blues and reds: better to hide stains.
